TACLOBAN CITY – This city is gearing up for a significant milestone as it prepares to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Typhoon Yolanda. The local government unit (LGU) of Tacloban is planning a series of events and activities to remember and honor the resilience of its people and the progress made since the disaster.

The commemorative activities, scheduled for November 8, will center on "a celebration of life and thanksgiving." Mayor Alfred Romualdez and city government officials will lead a traditional morning mass at the Holy Cross Memorial Mass grave of Yolanda victims in Brgy. Basper.

Later that morning, a mass and unveiling ceremony will occur at the Tacloban North Memorial Park in Brgy. Old Kawayan. This event holds particular significance as it is expected to emphasize the progress made in the northern barangay, which is part of a 13.8-hectare eco-tourism area, offering a viewing deck for the iconic San Juanico Bridge.

In the early evening, the city will hold a citywide candlelight memorial at the Yolanda marker situated at the Astrodome grounds and in various barangays across the city, commemorating the lives affected by the tragedy.

In addition, acting City Tourism Officer Malu Tabao has mentioned that President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr., is likely to attend the commemorative activities, adding to the event's significance. President Marcos is expected to unveil a marker at a city government project in Tacloban North, further symbolizing the city's resilience and progress.

Preparations for the commemoration are underway, with coordination meetings involving the Department of Tourism, the Office of Civil Defense, the Tingog Party list, and other stakeholders. The city government also plans to extend invitations to non-government organizations that played an important role in assisting the city in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan.

Several related activities are planned in the lead-up to the commemoration, including the "Handa Pilipinas" exhibit organized by the Department of Science and Technology and the Resiliency Forum hosted by the Office of Civil Defense, scheduled for November 3–6 within the city. —iTacloban (Source: CIO)
