TACLOBAN CITY –  Thirty-eight (38) Miss Universe Philippines 2023 candidates arrived in Tacloban City on May 1 to promote the Eastern Visayas region as a premier tourist destination.

The contestants, featuring three local representatives from Southern Leyte, Northern Samar, and Eastern Samar, will participate in various activities and events showcasing the area's rich culture, history, and attractions to bolster its tourism industry.

Borj Roxas, the project head of Miss Universe Philippines, expressed his excitement about the visit to the city and the surrounding areas of Leyte and Samar. He emphasized the importance of promoting tourism in the region as one of the organization's main goals.

Miss Universe Philippines, which views tourism as a central pillar, specifically selected Eastern Visayas for this year's pageant activities to highlight the region's readiness for more tourists and to display its stunning landscapes and cultural heritage.

During their visit, the candidates will honor the victims of Super Typhoon Yolanda by visiting two memorial parks dedicated to those who perished in the catastrophe. The contestants will also explore the region's culture and history through visits to local attractions, such as the newly constructed Leyte provincial building in Palo, a lively rice farm in Sta. Fe, the picturesque Kalanggaman Island in Palompon town, and the intriguing Sohoton Cave and thriving mat-weaving industry in Basey, Samar.

Meanwhile, Robinsons Hotels and Resorts is pleased to announce its role as the Official Hotel of the Miss Universe Philippines National Costume Competition, which will be held at Summit Hotels and Resorts in Tacloban.

A key event during the candidates' stay in Tacloban will be the national costume competition on May 4 at the renovated Leyte Normal University gym. The contest will display the ingenuity and skill of Filipino designers and the Philippines' cultural diversity. The national costume competition winner will receive an award, announced during the much-awaited coronation night.

The Miss Universe Philippines 2023 winner will represent the country in the prestigious Miss Universe pageant, scheduled to occur in El Salvador. The coronation night for Miss Universe Philippines 2023 will take place on May 13. —iTacloban
