PHILIPPINES – President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has officially declared August 8 to 14 of each year as "Philippine Space Week," aiming to promote space awareness among Filipinos. The decision comes after the Philippine Space Council's recommendation to enhance public understanding and interest in space science and technology.

The proclamation coincides with the passage of the Philippine Space Act on August 8, 2019, highlighting the government's commitment to advance space-related initiatives for the nation's benefit.

It emphasizes the need to increase space awareness and celebrate the significant contributions of Filipinos in the global space arena while also underscoring the value of space science and technology applications in improving the lives of Filipino citizens.

Under this proclamation, the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) is mandated to lead the observance of "Philippine Space Week" and recognize various programs, projects, and activities for the annual celebration.

All government agencies, including government-owned or -controlled corporations, state universities and colleges, local governments, non-government organizations, and private sectors, are encouraged to actively participate in the events and initiatives.

Through the implementation of "Philippine Space Week," the Philippine government aims to foster a culture of space exploration and research among Filipinos, inspiring the nation to take bold strides in space science and technology.

The week-long celebration will serve as a platform to showcase the country's advancements in space-related fields and strengthen collaborations with international partners.

Ultimately, the Philippine Space Week is expected to ignite the curiosity and enthusiasm of the Filipino people towards space, empowering future generations to contribute to space innovation and exploration, and positioning the Philippines as a key player in the global space community. —iTacloban
