TACLOBAN CITY – The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), in collaboration with the Provincial Government of Northern Samar, unveiled a groundbreaking project in Catarman to strengthen digital connectivity.

The project entails the installation of 22 Wi-Fi hotspots across Samar Island, including Northern Samar, Western Samar, and Eastern Samar, and establishing a Tech4Ed Centre in Northern Samar.

This latest endeavor by the DICT is part of their ongoing commitment to fortify free Wi-Fi accessibility in various localities, aligning with the nation's continuous transition to the new normal. Secretary Ivan John E. Uy of the DICT emphasized that the project holds immense potential to foster growth and development in Northern Samar.

"Information and Communications Technology has become the primary tool for our people in our pursuit of growth and development and to cope up with the challenges of our times," Secretary Uy remarked, underlining the pivotal role of digital infrastructure in driving societal advancement.

The project received resolute support from Northern Samar Governor Edwin Ongchuan and Vice Governor Clarence Dato, who recognized its significance in propelling the province closer to its vision of complete digital governance.

"This program of the DICT has surely enabled us, both the community and the government, to access greater avenues and opportunities for development and technological growth," Governor Ongchuan expressed his gratitude, acknowledging the profound impact of the DICT and the provincial government's combined efforts.

Vice Governor Dato echoed these sentiments and highlighted the project's instrumental role in bolstering the province's ongoing initiatives. "The free Wi-Fi for All Project of the department can provide in Northern Samar the much-needed source of connectivity for its line-up of priority projects," Vice Governor Dato stated, emphasizing the project's potential to support and sustain other regional developmental endeavors.

The Tech4Ed project, a cornerstone of this initiative, aims to create a centralized hub for digital information and ensure reliable internet access for the residents of Northern Samar.  (iTacloban)
