LTO considers shortening driver's license exam

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) is studying the possibility of shortening the driver's license exam in an effort to reduce the long processing time that has been driving some applicants to seek out the services of fixers.

Currently, the exam takes about an hour, prompting LTO Chief Jayart Tugade to form a committee to review the questions and determine if they can be shortened without compromising the quality of the drivers who pass.

Tugade believes that by reducing the exam duration, applicants will be discouraged from using fixers and will opt to take the exam themselves. In addition to shortening the exam, the committee is also considering customizing the questions based on the classification of the license or driver's license code being applied for.

The LTO is looking into shortening the exam for those applying for a non-professional license, a conductor's license, and those upgrading from a non-professional to a professional driver's license. They are also considering adding a driver's license code.

The long and tedious process at the agency has been one of the reasons why some applicants turn to fixers. Tugade hopes that by addressing this issue, the agency can reduce corruption and improve the overall quality of drivers on the road.

The LTO has yet to announce any official changes to the exam but assures the public that they will continue to work towards making the process more efficient and less prone to corruption. —iTacloban
