TACLOBAN CITY – The Philippine Army and Philippine National Police (PNP) assure the public that there is no imminent threat of attack by the New People's Army (NPA) in Eastern Visayas. This comes after rumors spread on social media, warning people to avoid public places such as malls, churches, and markets.

Both the Philippine Army's 8th Infantry Division (ID) and the regional office of the Philippine National Police have labeled these messages as "black propaganda" designed to instill fear and panic among the populace.

The 8th ID went further, saying that these rumors were "orchestrated by enemies of the state to attract support from sympathizers." The PNP, on the other hand, urged the public to disregard these rumors and refrain from spreading them.

The regional task force to end communist armed conflict in the region has also confirmed that the NPA cannot launch attacks in town centers due to its dwindling forces.

In fact, of the four NPA guerrilla fronts that operated in Samar Island last year, one was dismantled early this year, and the other has been weakened. Despite this, the Philippine Army urges the public to remain vigilant and cautious.

The Philippine Army and PNP have been working closely to maintain peace and order in Eastern Visayas, a region marred by past insurgent activities. They have been conducting regular joint patrols and operations to prevent the resurgence of the NPA and other armed groups. —Tacloban (Source: PNA)
