TACLOBAN CITY – The Department of Social Welfare and Development in Eastern Visayas (DSWD-8) and the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Leyte Regional Prison (LRP) have joined forces to provide educational assistance to 464 Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL) enrolled in the Alternative Learning System (ALS) for the school year 2022-2023.

The distribution of the educational assistance took place on April 13, 2023, at the ALS Building, Maximum Security Camp of LRP Abuyog, Leyte.

The ALS program is a vital tool in helping PDL receive an education that will give them a better chance at successful reintegration into society. The program allows them to learn basic literacy and numeracy skills as well as more advanced subjects, such as math, science, and social studies.

The distribution of educational assistance was a significant step towards achieving this goal. The 228 PDL enrolled in the elementary level of ALS received 1000 pesos each.

Meanwhile, the 172 PDL in junior high school and 64 PDL in senior high school received 2000 and 3000 pesos, respectively. The total educational assistance DSWD-8 provided to the PDL of LRP amounted to 764,000 pesos.

The educational assistance was intended to support the education needs of PDL, such as educational materials and equipment used in their studies. With these funds, PDL can purchase textbooks, school supplies, and other necessary items to complete their studies.

Providing educational assistance to PDL is an essential part of the BuCor program to provide PDL with the opportunity to study and return to their families and communities as productive citizens. This assistance also supports the government's commitment to providing quality education to all Filipinos, regardless of their circumstances. —iTacloban
