TACLOBAN CITY – The Department of Labor and Employment in Eastern Visayas (DOLE-8) is getting ready for the 121st Labor Day Celebration to be held on May 1, 2023, with the theme "Pabahay, Bilihing Abot-Presyo, Benepisyo ng Matatag na Trabaho para sa Manggagawang Pilipino (Housing, Affordable Prices, Benefits of Stable Work for Filipino Workers). "

The agency has finalized all activities for the event, according to OIC-Assistant Regional Director Norman L. Uyvico, the Overall Chairman of the Labor Day Preparations.

DOLE-8 has coordinated with other government agencies, such as the Department of Agriculture (DA) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), as well as with the DOLE-Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) members for the event.

The primary activities will be held at the Tacloban Convention Center (Astrodome) in Tacloban City, which includes a Job Fair and Livelihood Fair called "Kadiwa ng Pangulo para sa Manggagawa" (President's Kadiwa for Workers).

The Job Fair will have thirty-three (33) participating local employers offering 724 job vacancies as of April 14, 2023. The positions available include call center agents, delivery riders, loan consultants, customer service representatives, cashiers, teachers, audit associates, nurses, kitchen helpers, food servers, merchandisers, clerks, baggers, and drivers.

Eight (8) private recruitment agencies have also confirmed their participation, offering 6,742 overseas jobs for deployment to countries such as the USA, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Japan, New Zealand, and Brunei. These jobs include positions for engineers, managers, photographers, nurses, drivers, mechanics, electricians, welders, and painters.

The Livelihood Fair called "Kadiwa ng Pangulo para sa Manggagawa" will showcase 32 exhibitors selling food and non-food products. Most of these products will be sold at prices 10-20% cheaper than those in the market. The fair will feature basic commodities such as rice, fruits and vegetables, fish, and meat, as well as native delicacies, processed food, and handicrafts.

Before the commemorative program, a Zumba exercise and mass will be held on the morning of May 1. Livelihood and TUPAD grants will also be awarded to various local government units in the region during the program. DOLE-8 hopes to provide more opportunities for the people in the region to improve their lives and celebrate the contributions of workers to the country's development. —iTacloban (Source: DOLE-8)
