TACLOBAN CITY - Destructive fire continues to pose a serious threat to the safety and security of the community. With the aim to intensify fire safety awareness and prevent its occurrence, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Region 8 actively participated in the Kick-off Ceremony of the 2023 Fire Prevention Month, held at Rizal Plaza, Tacloban City today, March 1, 2023.

Led by Mr. Ramoncito C. Roa, Assistant Division Chief of the Finance and Administrative Division, the DILG Region 8 delegation signed a pledge of commitment with other stakeholders to support the advocacy of intensified fire safety to protect lives and properties.

This year's theme, "Sa Pag-Iwas sa Sunog, Hindi ka Nag-iisa!" highlights the importance of community involvement in promoting fire safety.

Fire Chief Superintendent Renato B. Capuz, Director for Personnel and Records Management, served as the program's guest speaker. He emphasized that with the start of the summer season, the demand for electricity in industries and households becomes higher, while the water supply in dams is lower, making fire suppression even harder. He also acknowledged the firefighters' efforts in ensuring the public's safety against destructive fires.

Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Region 8 showcased its 2022 accomplishments and performed the Water Salute, a ceremonial ritual symbolizing unity, cooperation, and harmony between BFP, fire volunteers, and other stakeholders. The colorful water stream does not represent any political affiliation but rather the various expertise and services offered by the BFP, fire volunteers, and stakeholders.

Local governments nationwide are likewise urged to support similar activities by the BFP to promote fire safety. The Kick-off Ceremony of the 2023 Fire Prevention Month aims to raise awareness and encourage everyone to be vigilant in preventing fires. —iTacloban
