Typhoon 'Malakas' to enter PAR on Holy Tuesday

Malakas is expected to intensify into a Typhoon before its reaches the Philippine Area of Responsibility in late Tuesday or early Wednesday with a peak intensity of 155 kph.

TACLOBAN CITY – Tropical Storm Malakas is expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) within the next 48 hours, according to a bulletin issued by the state-run weather bureau PAGASA on Sunday morning.

PAGASA reported that Malakas was located 1,570 kilometers east of Mindanao and moving northwestward at 30 kilometers per hour. It is possible that it will enter PAR on Tuesday as a TYPHOON category and will be given the local name "Basyang."

TS Malakas' were able to maintain a maximum sustained wind of 85 kilometers per hour near the center, with gustiness of up to 105 kilometers per hour.



Malakas will move generally northwestward today, April 10, until tomorrow, before slowing and turning north-northwestward and northward on Tuesday, April 12.

According to the latest forecast track of PAGASA, this tropical cyclone could make landfall in the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) late Monday or early Tuesday. Its stay in the PAR region will most likely be brief, as it is expected to leave by late Tuesday or early Wednesday.


This tropical cyclone is expected to intensify throughout the forecast period, reaching typhoon strength by Monday morning. Peak intensity of 155 kilometers per hour may be reached in late Tuesday or early Wednesday.
