TACLOBAN CITY – The newly completed comfort room with persons with disabilities (PWD) facilities inside Camp Sec. Ruperto Kangleon in Palo, Leyte, was inaugurated on Wednesday morning, February 9, by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Region 8 and the Police Regional Office (PRO) 8.

The inauguration ceremony was led by DPWH 8 Regional Director Allan S. Borromeo, who formally handed over the facility to Police Regional Office (PRO) 8 Director Brigadier General Bernard M. Banac.

This project, funded by GAA FY 2021, was carried out by DPWH Regional Office 8 and included the construction of a senior citizen comfort room with a PWD facility, a ramp, a septic vault, and gender-responsive facilities.

In his speech, RD Borromeo stated that this facility cost Php 3.2 million and was completed in four months last year. He also noted that this comfort room complies with Batas Pambansa Bldg. 344, an Act to Improve Disabled People's Mobility by Requiring Certain Buildings, Institutions, Establishments, and Public Utilities to Install Facilities and Other Devices.

"We shall continue to construct facilities and infrastructure projects that will be conducive to all, keeping equal rights and opportunities available to all of our stakeholders," RD Borromeo said.

He also stated that this facility is part of the department's responsibility to ensure that all government buildings have structural facilities that are gender-responsive and meet the needs of those who are physically challenged.

PBGen Banac also thanked DPWH Regional Office 8 and acknowledged DPWH's unwavering support for the PNP.

"This project is a manifestation of a faithful commitment to public service, cooperation, and partnership between DPWH and PNP." Director Banac said.

Director Banac assured EV police officers that similar projects would be prioritized and that he would continue to work on the development of facilities and other structures for the benefit of the entire PRO 8.

The comfort room is one of eight comfort rooms with PWD facilities that have been completed in 2021. Since 2018, DPWH Regional Office 8 has completed and implemented 38 structures with PWD facilities throughout the region. —Tacloban News Update (Source: DPWH-8)
