Southern Leyte gets P332.1M flood-control projects this 2021

PRESS RELEASE — The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is set to implement a total of nine (9) flood-mitigation projects for the flood-prone areas of Southern Leyte.

In his report to DPWH Secretary Mark A. Villar, District Engineer Manolo Rojas of DPWH Southern Leyte District Engineering Office (SLDEO) said that the province has received an allocation of P332.91 million from the 2021 General Appropriations Act (GAA).

The multi-million projects include the construction of embankments along riverbanks and coastlines considered as critical sections in the province. Two (2) each will be built in the town of Libagon and Maasin City; and one (1) each in St. Bernard, Silago, Hinunangan, Sogod, and Macrohon towns.

Construction of concrete barriers is a practical solution to the problem of overflowing and erosion that posed danger to dwellers near rivers, with the main objective of safeguarding the lives and properties of the people against major floods.

On top of these projects, DPWH SLDEO also implements other structural and non-structural flood-control measures like drainage improvement and declogging of waterways.

In 2020, Southern Leyte is also the recipient of 11 flood-control projects with an allocation of P387 Million from 2020 GAA. (DPWH)
