TACLOBAN CITY – In preparation for the upcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections in October, the Police Regional Office-8 (PRO-8) of Eastern Visayas initiated simultaneous checkpoints throughout the region on Monday, August 28.

Police Brig. Gen. Vincent Calonaga, the PRO-8 director, gave assurances regarding the meticulous enforcement of the election gun ban, which will be in effect until November 29. "All permits to carry firearms outside of residence are considered canceled except for those who have a certificate of authorization from the Comelec," Calonaga said.

Furthermore, he informed that the police have been granted the authority to visually inspect all vehicles. Regulations regarding this procedure have been disseminated to ensure public understanding and compliance. Calonaga sought to allay any apprehensions, emphasizing, "Motorists should not be afraid because we are only ensuring the people's safety during this election period."

In tandem with these developments, Comelec-8 Director Jose "Nick" Mendros highlighted expectations of prospective candidates leveraging the National Heroes’ Day holiday on Monday to commence the filing of their Certificates of Candidacy (CoCs).

The window for filing these certificates is open till September 2, with the official campaign period slated from August 28 to November 29. —iTacloban (Source: MB)
