TACLOBAN CITY - On the night of May 15, 2023, Mayor Alfred S. Romualdez, during a ceremony held to honor local athletes, pledged the Tacloban City Government's full support for their participation in the upcoming Palarong Pambansa.

These athletes, belonging to the Red Stallions Tacloban, recently made the city proud by securing 3rd place in the overall winners' tally at the 2023 Eastern Visayas Regional Athletic Association (EVRAA) Meet.

"I and the City Government of Tacloban stand with you in your endeavor to excel in the Palarong Pambansa," said Mayor Romualdez to the young athletes. He expressed his delight towards the athletes who secured an impressive 92 medals for the Tacloban City Division—19 gold, 27 silver, and 46 bronze.

In a recent Facebook post, the Mayor revealed that the athletes received monetary incentives as a salute to their exceptional skill and bravery demonstrated during the EVRAA meet. "Gold medalists received Php 7,000, while the Silver and Bronze medalists were awarded Php 5,000 and Php 3,000, respectively," he wrote. The Mayor praised the athletes' discipline, teamwork, and sportsmanship, factors that contributed to their first-ever 3rd placement in the said sports competition.

The Palarong Pambansa, the national sports competition of the Philippines, is slated to be held in Marikina this coming July 2023.

As a sign of the city government's continuous support to the youth engaged in sports, Mayor Romualdez also announced the plan to construct a sizeable Sports Complex. An inspection has already been conducted on a three-hectare piece of land in North Tacloban earmarked for this purpose.

This project aims to bolster the training of young athletes in various sporting disciplines, reinforcing the local government's commitment to promoting sports and fostering youth development. —iTacloban
