P258M in gov't assistance awarded on Labor Day

TACLOBAN CITY – The 121st Labor Day Celebration at the Tacloban City Convention Center (Astrodome) on May 1, 2023, marked the distribution of P258,467,619.00 worth of various government assistance programs. 

The event included the Job Fair and Kadiwa ng Pangulo para sa Manggagawa and featured the awarding of grants to numerous local government units (LGUs) and other recipients.

The bulk of the funds, totaling P188,883,770.00, were allocated to TUPAD assistance for over 70 LGUs and barangay LGUs. This support will benefit 48,944 displaced and marginalized workers. In addition, P56,940,829.00 in livelihood grants were awarded to more than 20 LGUs and BLGUs, helping 2,111 individuals who will soon start their businesses.

Regional Director Henry John S. Jalbuena emphasized the significance of the substantial assistance for Eastern Visayas workers, stating it demonstrates the administration's commitment to advancing the welfare of Filipino workers.

The Labor Day event also included the payout of salaries and claims. The Employees Compensation Commission (ECC) distributed P1,300,000.00 in financial assistance to 130 claimants of the COVID-19 aid, each receiving P10,000.00. Additionally, 1,093 interns received a total of P7,093,020.00 in GIP stipends.

Dignitaries present at the Labor Day Commemorative Program included Atty. Anacleto Rei Lacanilao III representing Mayor Alfred S. Romualdez and Mr. Alexis Yu representing Congresswoman Yedda Marie Romualdez, and Congressman Philip Jude Acidre of the Tingog Partylist. Solidarity messages were delivered by Mr. Bellsedaize C. Acaso, President of the Southern Leyte Electric Cooperative-Employees Union (SOLECO), and Mr. Christopher A. Garcia, Institutional Services Department Manager of the Leyte II Electric Cooperative (LEYECO II).
