TACLOBAN CITY – The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Eastern Samar District Engineering Office (ESDEO) is spearheading the construction of a state-of-the-art Multi-Purpose Building, an amphitheater, at the Eastern Samar State University (ESSU), Guiuan Campus.

The amphitheater project, broken down into two distinct stages, began in 2020 with the construction of the foundational structure. The final phase, slated for completion this year, will see the structure fully realized, complete with painting, plumbing, sanitary works, electrical systems with CCTV, and mechanical installations, including ventilation equipment and a fire alarm system.

The ground-breaking ceremony for the amphitheater took place on May 2, 2023, attended by notable local figures, including Congressman Marcelino Libanan, Congresswoman Maria Fe Abunda, and Guiuan Mayor Annaliza Kwan.

ESSU Guiuan Campus Administrator Jared Harem Q. Celis revealed that the project's funding was initiated by Congresswoman Abunda and later supplemented by Congressman Libanan.

Celis shared his anticipation for the new facility: "We're breaking ground today for an additional infrastructure that will be of immense benefit to our institution, and above all, to our students."

Assistant Regional Director Ma. Margarita Junia of DPWH Regional Office VIII highlighted the far-reaching impact of the amphitheater, not only for ESSU and Guiuan but for the entire province of Eastern Samar. She said, "Upon completion, this building will serve as a venue for community events, educational programs, and other significant activities. It will become a place of learning, celebration, and support, providing an invaluable resource for future generations."

The construction timeline for the amphitheater spans 234 days, with the inauguration planned before the year's end. —iTacloban
