The Philippine government has announced that the deadline for SIM card registration has been extended for another 90 days. This decision was made after low registration turnout was observed, and it was deemed necessary to provide more time for Filipinos to comply with the registration requirement.
The announcement was made during an inter-agency task force meeting on the oil spill in Mindoro, which was presided over by President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.
Initially, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) had announced that they would not extend the deadline, which was supported by some senators.
However, after careful consideration, authorities have decided to extend the registration period. The decision was made during the sectoral meeting, which was presided over by President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr., and Department of Information and Communications Technology Secretary Ivan John Uy was also present.
The SIM card registration is part of the government's initiative to prevent terrorism and criminal activities. Subscribers are required to provide their personal information and biometric data to telecom companies during the registration process. Extending the deadline will allow more Filipinos to comply with the government's mandate and contribute to the country's security efforts.
Failure to comply with the SIM card registration requirement could result in the deactivation of the subscriber's SIM card. This means that the subscriber will not be able to use their mobile phone for any purpose, including making calls, sending text messages, or accessing the internet. —iTacloban
