Holy Week activities in EV cause slight increase in COVID-19 cases –DOH-8

The Department of Health in Eastern Visayas reported a slight increase in new Covid-19 cases during Holy Week. The DOH advises the public to continue following minimum public health standards to prevent the spread of the virus.

TACLOBAN CITY – The Department of Health in Eastern Visayas (DOH-8) has reported an increase in new COVID-19 cases during Holy Week. From April 3-9, the region recorded nine new cases out of 32 samples tested during the height of Holy Week activities.

The region had a 28% positivity rate, higher than those recorded in the past weeks and months. However, the number is still too low compared to other parts of the country.

According to Jelyn Lopez-Malibago, the DOH Eastern Visayas regional information office, the nine new cases were mostly incidental COVID-19 cases, just like in the past weeks. She also believes that the effects of the holidays will be further seen in the coming weeks.

The DOH is advising the public to continue observing the minimum public health standards when in a crowded area, public spaces, or traveling. These practices include wearing face masks, isolating oneself when sick, getting vaccinated, and ensuring proper ventilation in enclosed spaces.

The region has logged 64,746 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic broke out in early 2020 until April 10, 2023, with 64,043 recoveries and 694 deaths. No severe or critical cases are currently admitted to hospitals due to COVID-19. —iTacloban (Source: PNA)
