TACLOBAN CITY – The Tacloban City District Engineering Office (TCDEO) has started the construction of a detour road in the Old Road Sagkahan area of Tacloban City.

The detour road is required to allow access to equipment and other necessities for the ongoing construction of shore protection at the Tacloban Astrodome or Tacloban City Coliseum area.

With a seating capacity of 4,500, the Tacloban Astrodome is an indoor arena primarily used for basketball, concerts, regional events, and conventions.

However, because of its proximity to a large body of water, it is extremely vulnerable to water-related natural disasters such as storm surges, which wreaked havoc on the city during Typhoon Yolanda 11 years ago.

The construction of shore protection is a necessary measure to prevent similar damage from occurring in the future.

The total contract amount for the shore protection construction project is Php 57,500,000, with a total span of 210 metres from the Astrodome to Café Lucia and 120 metres away from the coastline.

According to Project Engineer John Nichole Bertulfo, the detour road is only temporary and will be removed once the shore protection construction is complete.

"We also have future plans in connecting this on-going shore protection construction to the existing shore protection here in Astrodome to provide better protection against natural calamities," said Project Designer, Engr. Ted Bryan Bacor. —iTacloban (Source: TCDEO)
