TACLOBAN CITY – The Maintenance Division of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Regional Office replaced damaged/loose railings along the San Juanico Bridge on March 6, 2023.

This comes after a private vehicle bound for Tacloban City hit and detached a portion of the railings on February 24, 2023, on the Samar side of the bridge.

DPWH 8 Regional Director Edgar B. Tabacon immediately directed the DPWH Maintenance Division-San Juanico Bridge Task Force to assess the damage and secure the area for the traveling public's safety. "DPWH ensures that immediate repair to the damaged portion of the iconic bridge is implemented to avoid similar accidents," said RD Tabacon.

DPWH 8 San Juanico Bridge Task Force Head, Engr. Toribio Odtuhan reported that the repair works of the damaged railings involved the fabrication of two (2) steel posts and the installation of four (4) panel railings.

Before the repair, the DPWH 8 Maintenance Division-San Juanico Bridge Task Force Team, with the assistance of EZ Jones Construction Inc. equipment, immediately removed the vehicle to address the inconvenience and traffic along the bridge. Safety barricades had been installed to cover the areas where the railings had been rampaged temporarily.

The San Juanico Bridge, with a length of 2.16 km, was built in August 1969 and is the longest bridge along the Pan-Philippine Highway that connects Luzon and Mindanao. It is an iconic landmark that withstood natural calamities and human-made disasters, symbolizing the Filipino people's resilience and strength.

DPWH urges the public to be cautious when traveling along the country's San Juanico Bridge and other major thoroughfares. Motorists are reminded to observe traffic rules and regulations to avoid accidents and ensure the safety of everyone on the road. —iTacloban (Source: DPWH-8)
