TACLOBAN CITY – The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the Province of Southern Leyte have teamed up to provide food packages to 414 abaca farmers from four barangays in Bontoc, Southern Leyte. The food packages were distributed on January 25-26, 2023, to farmers in Barangays Olisihan, Pamigsian, Hitawos, and Hilaan.

As part of the "Food for Work" program, each farmer received one box of food supplies from the DSWD and another food pack from the Province of Southern Leyte. To be eligible for the program, the abaca farmers must plant 50 pcs of abaca seedlings.

The farmers expressed their concerns about the scarcity of abaca planting materials but were informed that PhilFIDA will soon be implementing the Odette Rehabilitation Project, which will provide each farmer with 50 seed-derived planting materials.

Another distribution will occur next week in Barangays Catmon, Catuogan, and Bunga. The food distribution program aims to support the abaca farmers and ensure they have access to the resources they need to continue their work.

The "Food for Work" program has been well-received by the abaca farmers, who appreciate the support they are receiving from the government. With this program, they are able to receive both food and assurance for their planting materials, which will allow them to continue growing their crops. —iTacloban
