Couple in Iloilo City uses red onions instead of traditional wedding items

Instead of traditional wedding favors, an Iloilo City couple gave guests red onions. Onions were used in the bridal bouquet, bridesmaids' bouquet, and groom, groomsmen, and parents' corsages.

VIRAL – A wedding in Iloilo City made headlines for an unexpected and unique twist on traditional wedding souvenirs. Instead of the usual trinkets or keepsakes, the couple, April Lyka Nobis and Erwin Nobis, gave their guests red onions.

The onions were used in the bridal bouquet, the bridesmaids' bouquet, and corsages for the groom, groomsmen, and parents.

According to GMA Regional TV One Western Visayas, the guests were initially surprised by the use of onions, but April explained that she had stumbled upon a post on social media featuring onions with flowers.

She then discussed the idea with her husband, Erwin, who agreed to use the onions instead of traditional flowers that would ultimately be thrown away after the event.

"Pagkakita nila sa bouquet ko, 'Wow!' Yayamanin daw ang wedding kasi ang mahal ng kilo ng sibuyas kaya nagulat sila na iyon ang gamit namin instead ng nakasanayang flowers [When they saw my bouquet, they said 'Wow!' They thought that our wedding would be expensive because onions are costly, so they were surprised that we used that instead of traditional flowers]," April said.

Erwin also shared his thoughts on the unique idea, saying, "I saw on social media that using expensive onions was trending, so I agreed to it."

The couple spent around P15,000 on five kilos of onions delivered on the morning of their wedding day.

While using red onions as wedding souvenirs may seem unconventional, it highlights the couple's creativity and resourcefulness in finding an alternative to traditional items. At present, red onions are facing steep prices in certain regions in the Philippines. —iTacloban
