BFAR lifts red tide warning in San Pedro Bay

BFAR 8 has lifted its red tide warning for San Pedro Bay in Basey, Samar. Meanwhile, Irong-Irong Bay in Catbalogan City, Samar, has tested positive for red tide toxin.

TACLOBAN CITY – The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR-8) in the Eastern Visayas region lifted its red tide warning for San Pedro Bay in Basey, Samar, on Monday, October 10, 2022.

BFAR-8 issued the advisory after a confirmatory test by the National Fisheries Laboratory Division, and BFAR-8 Marine Biotoxin Laboratory found that San Pedro Bay tested negative for paralytic shellfish toxin and its causative organism Pyrodinium bahamense.

Its updated local red tide advisory stated that "the shellfish and Acetes sp gathered from San Pedro Bay are now safe for human consumption. Likewise, gathering and/or harvesting and marketing shellfish from the above-mentioned area are now allowed."

Meanwhile, BFAR-8 continues its heightened monitoring of Irong-Irong Bay in Catbalogan City, Samar, after laboratory results confirmed that samples collected in the area were positive for paralytic shellfish poison (PSP) or red tide toxin.

In its latest local red tide advisory on Tuesday, October 11, BFAR-8 warned the public "to refrain from gathering, selling, and eating all types of shellfishes and Acetes sp, locally known as 'alamang or hipon' from Irong-Irong Bay."

The BFAR and LGU of Catbalogan are closely monitoring the above-mentioned area to safeguard public health and protect the shellfish industry. —iTacloban
