PNP supports Senate's investigation into text scam cases

PNP fully supports the Senate Committee on Public Services' proposed investigation into text scams victimizing millions of Filipinos.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) fully backs the Senate Committee on Public Services' plan to look into how scam text messages keep getting sent to millions of Filipinos.

PNP Officer-in-Charge Police Lieutenant General Jose Chiquito Malayo said that the police will help with the investigation and work together, just like they did in the recent text scam cases that the PNP Anti Cyber Crime Group worked on.

In relation to the recent "Personalized Text Scams" case, the PNP also gave its approval to the implementation of the SIM Card Registration Act. This law is meant to help law enforcement find scammers who use their communication devices to take advantage of people who don't know what's going on.

But there should be security measures in place to protect the data of prepaid subscribers, just like there are for postpaid subscribers.

"We continue to urge our countrymen to be cautious of incoming messages and not to believe them immediately, even if the text message bears their name. Never provide personal information when asked for it, especially by those requesting money. If they receive personal text messages, they should file a complaint with our PNP ACG offices or via Viber at 09618298083 or (02)7230401 Local 7491," Malayo added.
