The Samar Provincial Local Government Unit and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) - Eastern Visayas hold a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday, July 20, for the Spark Samar Sports Development Project in Catbalogan City, Samar.

According to DPWH 8 Regional Director Allan S. Borromeo, the sports complex has an initial budget of Php 180 million for its first phase, which includes the construction of its foundation and initial structures.

"Funded under GAA 2022, this will be implemented soon, and I assure you that there is a large fund for this project in the following year," RD Borromeo said.

This multi-year project will be located on a 16-hectare plot of land in Catbalogan City, Samar, in Barangay Lagundi. The sports development project will include an 8100-seat stadium complex, a museum, a business process outsourcing (BPO) campus, a commercial strip, hyper courts, a football and track field, an amphitheater, and a skatepark, and even a hotel and residential subdivision.

"We will collaborate with both the provincial and city governments to bring this project to fruition," the official said.

The Spark Samar Sports City project aims to boost Catbalogan City's economic development by hosting and featuring major sporting events such as the Palarong Pambansa. The sports complex is also expected to be the main and spacious avenue for festivals and other celebrations highlighting Samar province's diverse culture.

Samar 2nd District Representative Reynolds Michael Tan, Vice Governor Arnold Tan, Architect William T. Ti of WTA Architecture and Design Studio, Samar PLGU officials, and other DPWH Region 8 officials also attended the groundbreaking ceremony. —iTacloban (Source: DPWH-8)
