TACLOBAN CITY – To raise public awareness about proper solid waste management, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Eastern Visayas, in collaboration with the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB), launched the Solid Waste Management Advocacy Campaign.

The campaign featured the mascot 'Pinas Basura Buster' (PBB), audio-video

presentations, and the new mobile game application 'Basura Buster' for children aged five to eight.

According to EMB-8 Regional Director Engr. Reynaldo B. Barra, the campaign aims to lay a strong foundation for proper solid waste management among children and youth who will soon serve as solid waste ambassadors.

Undersecretary for Enforcement, Solid Waste Management, Local Government Units Concerns, and Attached Agencies of DENR, Usec. Benito Antonio T. De Leon has asked for the help of partners from local government units (LGUs), academia, the media, and other stakeholders in changing the mindset of the youth toward proper solid waste management.

"We have always believed in the capacity of the youth to propagate sound environmental practices, however, the responsibility to shape young mind lie in our hands, so we ask your assistance in disseminating our advocacy. Please help us get on board the different sectors of our society in our solid waste management advocacy campaign," he said.

"We hope this event will provide not just entertainment but most importantly will convey the message that we are all in realizing, collaborating, and supporting our solid waste management program," Undersecretary De Leon added.

Director Khalil S. Bayam of the DENR central office's Strategic Communication and Initiatives Service encouraged everyone to participate in the advocacy and work together to protect the environment and conserve our natural resources.

The DENR invites its LGU, academe, youth, media, and general public partners to use the mobile game application 'Basura Buster,' which can be downloaded from the Google Playstore, and the PBB materials to spread SWM concepts in Region 8.

The Department hopes that the SWM advocacy campaign, represented by Pinas the Basura Buster, will rally different sectors to pursue sound environmental practices.

Suarez, Assistant Regional Director for Management Services Arturo Salazar, EMB Regional Director Reynaldo Barra, and MGB Division Chief Engr.
