Two kids drown, four survive in Leyte beach

TACLOBAN CITY – On Tuesday, May 3, two children drowned, and four others survived a drowning incident on a beach in Aloha Red Beach of Brgy. Baras Palo, Leyte.

The first victim was identified by authorities as 16-year-old student Jhon Martin Canaleja from Brgy. Cavite-West of Palo, Leyte, while the second victim, identified as 11-year-old student Michelle Nablo from the same area, was reported missing first.


Meanwhile, other drowning victims were 16-year-old Nikko Mataro, 12-year-old Edison Orteda, 16-year-old Dennis Candalo, and 11-year-old Alex Barreto. All are residents of Brgy. Cavite West, Palo, Leyte. The rescuers were able to revive them.

According to the report, the children were swimming at the beach when a strong wave swept them away around 3 p.m.

Palo Fire Station, Palo Rescue Unit, and other responders rushed to the scene to assist the victims. The responding team helped administer CPR to one of the victims, Canaleja, who had no pulse and was not breathing.


He was then transported to Leyte Provincial Hospital by the ambulance of Palo Rescue Unit, where the attending physician pronounced him dead upon arrival.

Four other victims, all of whom were students, were conscious and were taken to the same hospital.

The body of Michelle Nablo, the second victim, was found on Wednesday afternoon, May 5. According to a report, it was spotted floating approximately 500 meters off the coast of Barangay 88 in San Jose, Tacloban City. —Tacloban News Update
