The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) will restart the Government Internship Program (GIP) in May after deferring it in 2020 and 2021 to ensure the safety and protection of youth from the COVID-19 pandemic.

GIP is a component of the Philippine government's Kabataan 2000 program. It aims to allow both out-of-school and in-school youth to gain hands-on experience working in various government agencies. The experience exposes the youth to public service, which will be beneficial when they enter the workforce.

The evaluation of GIP applications for youth aged 19 to 25 and enrolled in senior high school or college will begin in the second week of May. One of the program's eligibility requirements is that applicants' family income does not exceed the current poverty line of Php12,082. They must also present their COVID-19 vaccination cards.

Each DSWD-Field Office will have 80 slots available, while the DSWD Central Office in Batasan, Quezon City, will have 35 slots.

Qualified GIP participants will be required to serve for 30 days and will receive a stipend equal to 75% of the region's current wage rate.

As part of the safety measures, GIP participants will be scheduled in two separate batches and assigned to various workstations based on their assessed skills in the Central Office. Encoding, report writing, and assisting in the implementation of key Department programs will be among the regular office tasks they will be performing. Meanwhile, GIP participants in DSWD Field Offices will perform the same assigned tasks for their respective LGUs. —Tacloban News Update (Source: DSWD)
