The Regional Office 8 of the Department of Public Works and Highways has invested Php 99.5 million in the purchase of new heavy equipment, which will be distributed to the region's ten District Engineering Offices for use.

In his report to Regional Director Allan S. Borromeo, Equipment Management Division (EMD) Chief Alex S. Dagalea stated that the office had acquired 14 units of equipment through regular bidding.

"These will be deployed to various DEOs that critically need equipment, especially during disasters.", Engr. Dagalea stated.

Four (4) units of hydraulic excavators (backhoe), seven (7) units of backhoe/loader, one unit of a road grader, a payloader, and a drop side truck with a 3T crane capacity are among the newly acquired equipment.

RD Borromeo also stated that the two recent typhoons that hit the country, "Agaton" and "Odette," caused massive damage in Eastern Visayas, primarily in areas under the jurisdiction of DEOs.

"Undeniably, so much has changed how typhoons and other natural disasters affect our region. The procurement of this equipment will be helpful for DEOs to respond easier and faster during calamities," Director Borromeo explained.

Four hydraulic excavators were recently delivered to the RO8-EMD office, and seven backhoe/loaders will be delivered in June. The remaining equipment is expected to arrive within the next three months.

Meanwhile, new dredging equipment worth Php 70 million has been purchased and will be used in the Regional Office. A swampy tractor, a crawler-mounted (swampy bulldozer type), and a multi-purpose amphibious dredge are among them. The equipment is also expected to arrive in June.

The office has also purchased equipment worth Php 134 million in total for road construction and waste management in 2020. A rough terrain crane, a self-loading truck with a boom, two hydraulic excavators, two loader excavators, a payloader, and one amphibious excavator are among them.

RO8 also purchased water-based and dredging support equipment worth Php 126 million in CY 2019, including amphibious excavators, one payloader, hydraulic excavators, vacuum sewer jet machine trailer, aerial man lift platform truck, and others. —Tacloban News Update (Source: DPWH)
