TACLOBAN CITY - The Police Regional Office 8 (PRO 8) is glad that the Holiday celebrations such as Christmas and New Year, throughout Eastern Visayas, have been generally peaceful.

According to Pol. Lt. Col. Maria Bella Rentuaya, spokesperson of PRO 8, there are no reports of any untoward incidents during Christmas Day. The region welcomed the New Year with zero-firecracker related injuries or deaths.

There are also no victims of stray bullets during the Christmas and New Year Celebrations.

Rentuaya said in a report, that six urban cities and 80 towns/municipalities in the region have issued ordinances that prohibit the distribution, and manufacture, of any or all kinds of firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices.

The Regional Peace and Order Council-Eastern Visayas Region prior suggested to local government units (LGUs) to ban or prohibit the use of all types of firecrackers.

Meanwhile, the top police official in the region is proud of having zero firecracker-related injuries or deaths in the region during the celebration of New Year's Day.

Brigadier General Ronaldo De Jesus, police director said, “In the past years, cases of firecracker-related injuries have been overwhelming. This year, we have to make sure that our medical frontliners do not have to attend to such cases while still battling the coronavirus crisis."

De Jesus added that it is due “to the steadfast support of the stakeholders and the cooperation of the community to all the peacekeeping efforts of the Philippine National Police.”

“With your unwavering commitment to enforce the laws, I have been confident that we can properly execute our sworn-duties,” he continued, as he praised the effort of the 1,643 police personnel who were deployed in various places in the region during the holiday celebration. iTacloban
